In January 2014, Dr. Daichao Sheng (University of Newcastle, Australia) joined Dr. Ian Moore (Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada) in leading the Canadian Geotechnical Journal Editorial team. Dr. Sheng has served as an Associate Editor with the journal since 2008.
Daichao Sheng is presently the Head of Discipline in Civil, Surveying & Environmental Engineering, in the School of Engineering and Co-Director of the Priority Research Centre for Geotechnical and Materials Modelling at the University of Newcastle. His expertise is in unsaturated soil mechanics, computational geomechanics, and cold region geotechnics. A Fellow of Engineers Australia (FIEAust), and a member of College of the Australian Research Council, Dr. Sheng also holds a Distinguished Professorship at Central South University in China.
A world-leading researcher, Dr. Sheng has received many awards for his publications, including the R.M. Quigley Award — presented annually by the Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS) for the best paper published in the Canadian Geotechnical Journal. In addition to his Editorship with CGJ, he also serves on the editorial boards of Computers and Geotechnics, Environmental Geotechnics, Geotechnical Research, and Mathematical Problems in Engineering.
“The success of a journal relies very much on the selfless contributions of many people, like the Associate Editors and reviewers,” says Dr. Sheng. “I will closely work with these people in a collaborative, respectful and professional way. Dr. Moore has also set a good example to follow and I have always enjoyed working with him when I was an Associate Editor. I look forward to working with him in this new capacity.”
“In my role as Editor, I see that my job is to serve the best interests of the authors and readers. Efficient and professional handling of submissions, along with good readership and high impact are important factors for authors. Ideally, I would like authors to think of CGJ as their first choice when they are submitting their work. For readers, we have to make sure papers published are of interesting to read, and helpful for their work. In the ever-competitive business of research and publishing, impact factor and other metrics cannot be ignored. CGJ still has room to improve and I hope to help the journal in this regard.”
The Canadian Geotechnical Journal, part of the NRC Research Press journal collection, celebrated 50 years of publication in 2013.
