FACETS welcomes new Early Career Research Editor cohort

A new cohort of Early Career Researchers (ECRs) is joining the FACETS editorial team!

FACETS is Canada’s first multidisciplinary open access science journal and spans diverse fields, including the natural and applied sciences, life and health sciences, engineering, data science, and social sciences, with a special focus on their intersections. 

With support from FACETS’s regular editors, three ECR Editors will serve 3-year terms, receiving training and mentorship in peer review and publication processes. Upon the completion of their  terms, the ECR Editors will have the opportunity to formally transition to become Subject Editors of the FACETS editorial board.  

Each ECR is being supported by a dedicated mentor from the FACETS Editorial board. We thank Brock Fenton, Elisabeth Gilmore, Victoria Metcalf, and David Moher for sharing their time and expertise in peer-review and publication processes. 

The ECR Editorial Board program will run into the future and continue to support new researchers on their publishing journey throughout their careers.

Sara Cannon (settler) is a Liber Ero Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Indigenous Fisheries (University of British Columbia) and the Salmon Watersheds Lab (Simon Fraser University). Her community-partnered research examines cumulative environmental stressors and governance across tropical Pacific coral reefs and temperate Pacific salmon watersheds, bringing Indigenous knowledge frameworks together with marine and fisheries science.

Lauren Lawson is an NSERC Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Carleton University. She is a freshwater ecologist whose research focuses on spatial assessment of threats to freshwater biodiversity, with a current emphasis on Species at Risk. Dr. Lawson sits on the Board of Watersheds Canada, where she contributes scientific expertise to freshwater ecosystem restoration and education initiatives.

Camilla Negri is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Toronto Metropolitan University.  She develops water quality models as decision-support tools for current conditions and under future climate. Dr. Negri is committed to involving stakeholders and experts in the modelling process, with the goal of producing solution-oriented science that helps farmers, policymakers, and catchment managers design effective, locally tailored interventions for clean water and sustainable food systems.

Phillip Oelbaum is a postdoc at York University, working with molecular methods to document species interactions, with focus on Ontario native pollinators. Dr. Oelbaum is also building a long-term research program to monitor Jamaican bats and improve conservation outcomes. His research interest includes how animals interact with each other and their environment and examining flexibility of diet in tropical bats.
